I was immediately overwhelmed with excitement when the plane started its descent. I could already see the fields of forest and hills that extended all around the city of San Jose. Getting out of the airport was a tad challenging just because my bag is really fat and awkward to carry and I had not been to a foreign country on my own before. So when I exited the airport, I was shocked by all the people standing around trying to get me to take their taxi! I finally let a taxi man take me after seeing that their taxi service looked legit. The driving is of course super aggressive, but I could say the same for taxi drivers in the states. I really wish I had studied Spanish in school, I feel that it would have been a better language to learn then french. I feel so horrible not being able to speak the locals language. I am trying but it still does not feel like enough. I have just never been in the situation where I am the one speaking a foreign language. I have never been uncomfortable like this before but I think it is good for me to learn how to cope with these situations. I now feel more sympathetic to foreigners in the US, especially since we as Americans do not even try too hard to speak other languages, while in Costa Rica I could easily find someone who speaks English. I got 40 of my american dollars converted to the Costa Rican colones. The bills show vivid pictures, one of a sloth hanging in a tree, and another showing a deer in a meadow. It is easy to see how much Costa Rica cares for its wildlife and habitats. I am so happy that I am able to stay here for 6 weeks.
The hotel is very americanized, probably since it is the Holiday Inn Express (haha). I wanted my parents to let me stay at a hostel but they decided they would be happier if I was in a place closer to the airport. It is nice, and I have ordered pizza hut delivery! I am excited to see how it compares to that of Oklahoma's pizza hut pizza. I will for sure give you all a detailed review! I have a flight tomorrow at 5:50 am from San Jose to Tortuguero on the east coast. The plane flying us is a cessna 208B, can only fit 12 passengers. I have never flown in a plane that small so I am happy to see how it goes!
I also wanted to say thank you to my lovely mom and dad, without them none of this would have been possible. I love you mom and dad!
See you tomorrow!
